The company
John Murray & Co. Ltd. was founded on the Scottish island of Mull in 1982. At that time, the company only produced Columba Cream, a Scottish whisky liqueur made according to a traditional recipe and without artificial additives. The founding Bartholomew family named their liqueur after the famous Irish monk St Columba. The monk promoted Christianisation in Scotland and parts of England from the island of Iona in the 6th century.
In 1995, the company moved to Perth and was renamed the Scottish Liqueur Centre. In addition to other liqueurs, Scottish whiskies have also been bottled in the company's own bottling plant for some time now.
As the company's focus is now on the whisky range, the company was renamed"Morrison & MacKay Whisky Merchants" in June 2014. The company is managed by three people who have been working in the industry for some time. These include a member of the Morrison family, the former owners of the Bowmore distillery.
The range
The well-known whisky liqueurs Bruadar, Columba Cream and Ginger Tam's are currently produced. Bruadar - Gaelic for "dream" - is made with sloes and honey. It is the Scottish whisky alternative to the English classic "Sloe Gin", a gin flavoured with sloes. Columba Cream, on the other hand, is a cream liqueur with blossom honey based on an old family recipe. The single malt is sourced from the Tullibardine distillery. Ginger Tam's is a high-proof whisky liqueur that contains ginger, among other things.
However, the focus for the future is on the special single malts in the Càrn Mòr series. All whiskies are not chill-filtered and are bottled without colouring. The various Strictly Limited and Celebration of the Cask series, as well as Beinn a'Cheo, have been released within the range.
In addition to the liqueurs and single malts, the Old Perth blend is also bottled from younger Aultmore and malts from other distilleries.
